Pre-Tournament Report

Date:
By Ronny Reuters OBE (MP)

As part of the strenuous task that face me as part of the MPFC Organising Committee, I have had to spend the last four days at the tournament location.

I can report that the river is looking good again. After almost 6 months of dirty river where there was no oyster farming, it opened this week. I submitted myself to many hours of close tidal and bait analysis and have the following conclusions:

  • All flathead are caught between 6am and 9am on plastics
  • Days starting with S are not good for me to catch fish
  • The very last cast of the weekend will yield the best fish, so maybe do nothing until 12:59 on Sunday
  • The crappiest bait, left over home-made chicken nuggets, are a fish magnet to big bream (only discovered on last throw of the weekend)
  • The best location for big bream is right across the road, not miles up the river (only discovered on last throw of the weekend)
  • In a recent sample of 3 keepers and about 12 throwbacks, none had red spot disease.

Additionally

  • The great people at Manning Point Marina and Restaurant have a great collection of prizes for the 2008 Classic
  • The beer at the bowling club is almost at the correct temperature
  • The raffles are still rigged (i.e. no wins for me)
  • The weather was glorious
  • The BBQ is well seasoned
  • The facilities are all in order;  and
  • I did NOT tether any fish

All bodes well for the 2008 Classic.
