Red Spot Has Implications for Classic

Date:
By  Codfish Cowling

There have been reports of some fish recently caught by recreational and commercial fishers in different areas of the Clarence & Manning Rivers showing signs of Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) or 'red spot disease'. This is caused by a fungus (Aphanomyces invadans) and shows as red lesions (sores) or deep ulcers.

Authorities believe the fungus to have originated from the waters surrounding a well known brewery that shall remain unnamed until further legal proceedings are finalised.

Advice from the NSW Food Authority says these fish should not be eaten. These fish shall not be thrown back into the river, all fish will count towards bag limit, and if an undersize diseased fish are caught, fishers will be liable to licence suspension if caught in possession, and fined if they throw them back.
